Filipino pop-rock quintet Mayonnaise know their way around an indie-inflected cut. Formed in 2002—their moniker coming from The Smashing Pumpkins’ slow-burner—they won 2004’s Red Horse Muziklaban competition which rocketed them to fame. Their penchant for a memorable guitar hook, sublime songwriting and uplifting vibes all meet in a melodic sound that’s stormed the local alt-rock scene. Taking cues from the jumpy rhythms of pop-punk (“Tayo Na Lang Dalawa”) and sweet, heart-on-sleeve indie (“Jopay”), their anthems are as potent as they are poignant.
