Cannonball Adderley Essentials

In 1955, a young Cannonball Adderley sat in with Oscar Pettiford's group in New York City. Pettiford tried to rattle him with breakneck tempos, but the Florida-born sax man played the difficult changes with ease. That show established Adderley as a force in jazz, and days later he signed to Savoy Records. He went on to record with Miles Davis on iconic albums and co-led his own band with his brother Nat, which became one of the most celebrated groups in jazz history. His mind-blowing hard-bop albums launched careers for many future jazz greats, including Yusef Lateef. Adderley died in 1975.
