Bridging the gap between country-folk traditions and more pop-friendly singer/songwriters, Brad Butcher takes equal inspiration from the likes of Cat Stevens, James Taylor and Lori McKenna. Yet the Queensland native doesn’t shy away from classic bluegrass instrumentation, with 2017’s “Crawl Beg & Cry” deploying banjo, mandolin and fiddle to spirited effect. He’s capable of bristling darkness, too: “Nature’s Course” broods over the distinct possibility that failure was baked into a relationship. All those dots are connected beautifully on 2022’s retrospective collection Storyteller, which includes the frisky throwback “Cutting Peoples Grass”.
