As a bassist, composer and educator, William Parker is one of the spiritual fathers of modern jazz. Born in the Bronx, Parker became involved in the loft scene of the early 1970s, making his first recording with Frank Wright. He then began a fruitful association with pianist Cecil Taylor, with whom he played Carnegie Hall; later collaborators include Peter Brotzmann, Evan Parker and Bill Dixon. In recent years, Parker has developed his big band and small group work, and remains crucial to the NYC scene through his mentorship of young musicians and creation of The Vision Festival in 1996.
