About Wau Wau Collectif
Artist Biography
Wau Wau Collectif is a transcultural musical project created in 2018 by left-field Swedish musician, producer, and ethnomusicologist Karl-Jonas Winqvist and Senegalese multi-instrumentalist and studio engineer Arouna Kane, along with dozens of musicians from numerous cultures and traditions. The sound on their 2018 debut, Yaral Sa Doom, offered an umbrella for musical approaches from children's songs and nursery rhymes to protest songs and tribal chants. They employed organic and synthetic polyrhythms and diverse instrumentation ranging from flutes to electric guitars, keyboards, and koras to dozens of drums and percussion instruments. All were layered under a diverse, multi-linguistic array of vocals -- sampled and live. In 2021, Winqvist returned to Dakar, where he and Kane reassembled most of the original cast and a host of fresh collaborators to record their sophomore long-player, Mariage. It was issued in February of 2022.
