About The Golliwogs
Artist Biography
Formed in El Cerrito, California, this accomplished quartet -- John Fogerty, Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook, and Doug Clifford -- were initially known as the Blue Velvets, but took the Golliwogs’ name as a precondition of their recording contract with Fantasy Records. The Golliwogs were never happy with the moniker, nor with the blond wigs they were sometimes required to wear, but between 1964 and 1967 they completed a series of excellent singles. Tom Fogerty dominated early releases, but by 1966 his younger brother was wresting control of the group. "Walk on the Water" and "Fight Fire" showed the group developing a defined, original sound. Having turned fully professional in December 1967, they evolved into Creedence Clearwater Revival. ~ Rovi Staff
