About Lizbeth Webb
Artist Biography
b. 30 January 1926, Caversham, Oxfordshire, England. A much-admired ingénue in West End musicals during the late 40s and early 50s, Lizbeth Webb began her career as a singer with dance bands. Following a recommendation from an eminent leader of one of those popular ensembles, Geraldo, Charles B. Cochran chose her to understudy Carol Lynne in the Vivian Ellis / A.P. Herbert musical, Big Ben (1946). After Lynne, in Ellis’ own words, ‘retired from the cast to open her nursery’, Webb took over the role of Grace Green in fine style, and was rewarded less than a year later, when Cochran, Ellis, and Herbert created Bless The Bride especially for her. As the young English girl, Lucy Veracity Willow, Webb captivated audiences with her delightful performance of one of Ellis’ most exquisite ballads, ‘The Silent Heart’, and also shared two outstanding duets with Georges Guétary, ‘I Was Never Kissed Before’ and ‘This Is My Lovely Day’. In the 50s she continued to shine in shows such as Gay’s The Word (‘On Such A Night As This’, ‘Sweet Thames’), in 1951, and Guys And Dolls (as Miss Sarah Brown, 1953). She also appeared in the 1953 Royal Variety Performance, and toured the UK provinces in Jubilee Girl (1956). In 1959, she appeared in the BBC Television adaptation of Eric Maschwitz and Hans May’s 1948 hit musical, Carissima, before retiring from the stage in order to marry and become Lady Campbell. However, she was seen again in the West End some 10 years later in a brief revival of The Merry Widow at the Cambridge Theatre. Sadly, an injury prevented her from singing hit numbers from Bless The Bride in Spread A Little Happiness, a joyful celebration of the life of Vivian Ellis, following the composer’s death in June 1996.
