It is not known exactly when Sheppard became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal but he was a member in 1552. He was present for the coronation of Elizabeth I but his music also indicates that he was composing during the reign of Edward. These English works include anthems and works for the service. The Latin works date from Mary's reign and include a six voice Magnificat characterized by elaborate counterpoint and no imitation. These qualities date it to the time of the Eton Choirbook while his more modern compositions included "The Western Wynde," a mass, and the "Missa Cantate." The majority of Sheppard's compositions were motets with extensive counterpoint set around a cantus firmus that was rhythmically the same throughout. ~ Keith Johnson
