About J. P. Nestor
Artist Biography
Leader of a rural Virginian string band, J.P. Nestor recorded four sides at the same 1927 session where the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers debuted. Though he was invited to New York for additional recording, Nestor refused to journey that far and he never recorded again. Still, "Train on the Island" became a regional favorite, and the track was included on Harry Smith's excellent 1952 folksong compendium Anthology of American Folk Music. Perhaps shunning a more urbane existence proved fruitful -- Nestor lived to the ripe old age of ninety-one. ~ John Bush
