About Gunilla Thorn
Artist Biography
Minor vocalist who was the object of the Svengali treatment in the studio by Joe Meek in 1963. Probably of interest because of her look (a photographer discovered her) than her singing, Thorne released one single on EMI's HMV label, Geoff Goddard's "Merry Go Round" backed with Meek's "Go On There, " which promptly disappeared. Ritchie Blackmore plays some aggressive guitar on both sides, but his contribution and any merits of either side were lost by a heavier than usual dollop of Joe Meek studio gimmickry-Meek evidently tried to disguise her Swedish accent by double-tracking her vocal and speeding it up, which prompted even the reviewers in Melody Maker to remark that "she sounds as if she's played at the wrong speed." Thorne's whereabouts since the mid-1960's are anybody's guess. ~ Bruce Eder
