About Freddie Redd
Artist Biography
A classic bop pianist and a composer of haunting melodies, Freddie Redd enjoyed an itinerant, episodic career. His debut, Introducing...., was released by Prestige in 1955, the same year he appeared on dates led by Gene Ammons and Art Farmer. He composed the original score for Jack Gelber's play The Connection; he also acted and played in it and the Shirley Clarke film. Redd recorded 1960's The Music from "The Connection" for Blue Note and Shades of Redd in 1961. He soon moved to Europe, where he performed regularly, but he became quite obscure in the U.S. In 1974, he moved to Los Angeles and issued intermittent yet worthy sessions for Interplay, Uptown, Triloka, and Milestone through 1990. His final recordings, Music for You (2015) and With Due Respect (2016), were released by SteepleChase.
