About Bohemia
Artist Biography
Few artists can lay claim to spawning an entire genre. Bohemia, however, is frequently cited as the desi hip-hop trailblazer—the Pakistani-American pioneer of a movement he kicked off in the mid-2000s that combined modern hip-hop with traditional Indian music. The prolific Punjabi rapper, singer, songwriter and producer often focused his relentless lyrics on themes of growing up with aspirations amid identity crises, something that would define other desi hip-hop stars over the years. Bohemia (aka Roger David) was born in Pakistan and grew up on the US West Coast, honing his style in good company. But it was his second album, 2006’s Pesa Nasha Pyar, that set a new benchmark as the first full-length Punjabi rap album released on a major label. With a little help from a massive online network of underground rappers and hip-hop enthusiasts, Bohemia soon became the first name in desi hip-hop with songs like “Kali Denali” and Snoop Dogg-backed “Favourite spot”. “Ek Tera Pyar” (featuring singer Devika) from 2009 album Da Rap Star was also another milestone track, reflecting the artist’s significant growth. And the beats went on, with records and singles charting anything from love stories to tales of struggle and perseverance. Bohemia has also built a rep as a rapper’s rapper, thanks to his undeniable control and confidence, leading to collabs with the next generation of Punjabi pop and hip-hop stars. His turn on Guru Randhawa’s “Patola” in 2015 is notable, as is his team-up with Sidhu Moose Wala on “Same Beef” in 2019 and his work with Karan Aujla and American rapper The Game on 2020’s “Ek Din”.
