Strange Euphoria
Album · Rock · 2012
With tracks chosen by Ann and Nancy Wilson, Strange Euphoria is a career retrospective that also gives listeners insight into what its creators see as the band's important moments. At its best, Heart made a solid mix of folk and hard rock, owing an obvious debt to Led Zeppelin but with its own strong vocal and guitar capabilities. Ann Wilson & The Daybreaks' 1969 single "Through the Eyes and Glass" begins the flood of rarities. The early demos of the Heart hits "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You" sound as fresh as if they were recorded yesterday. The live version of "White Lightning & Wine" is ferocious, with dirty lead guitars benefitting from a spare mix. The highlights are everywhere, including "Bebe Le Strange", a live version of "Barracuda," and the gentleness of "Hey You". The later band The Lovemongers gave the Wilson sisters a chance to find themselves after all of the '80s hairspray. This anthology puts the focus on the music that was always closest to their hearts.
