BabyChiefDoit wastes little time introducing himself on his 2024 debut album. The Chicago-born post-drill rapper takes influence from his city, but incorporates sound from all over the borderless landscape of mid-2020s rap. Opener “Hummingbird” features an industrial synth line backed by buzzing bass and distorted drums. Though still relatively new to the rap game, on ANIMALS ONLY the rapper has already identified what fuels him: “All of a sudden, it's fuck ChiefDoit/A second ago, them n***as was fans.” On “Laugh At Em”, though, BabyChief learns how to counter his haters. It’s this blend of vulnerability—admitting that opps are annoying—and defiance that defines ANIMALS ONLY. Over a haunting vocal sample and dusty strings, he takes joy in his victories. Not even the nastiest enemy can take away his success. He raps, “I laugh at the fact that I got rich off droppin' teasers/I'm MVP in this shit, this is just my rookie season.”
