Nio García has always been a team player. Looking back at the past decade, the rapping reggaetonero from San Juan played a crucial part on several of his collab-crazed genre’s seminal hits. His memorable leadership on the game-changing “Te Boté”, alongside other charting hits like “AM Remix” and “La Jeepeta”, would be impressive enough without the added accolades coming from stacked posse cuts like the “Travesuras” remix. Yet despite these collective wins, his time in the solo spotlight has been oddly scarcer, as if he’s been saving up energy for a moment like Anto-Nio. As hinted by preceding singles “Como Antes” and the R&B-endowed “Shortycita”, García’s long-awaited album finds him without features nearly as often as with them. Free to experiment with styles at this stage in his career, he keeps the beats at bay for the balladic opener “Por Ahora” and takes a distinctly more tropical route on the unexpected “Autor”. Of course, fans won’t be disappointed by his relatively more straightforward forays into reggaetón and trap fare, showcased amid the perreo-fuelled come-ons of “Mezcal” and the tempo-shifting erotica of “Horny”. The guest list is reliably sound as well, evidenced by appearances by fellow hitmakers Anuel AA on “Oh Na Na” and Wisin on “Arabe”. García’s Now or Never cohort Casper Mágico keeps things breezy on “Un Zippy” with iZaak, while Brytiago indulges their shared proclivities on the methodically paced “Anónima”. All the while, he maintains his ear for melodies and hooks, a quality that rings true on “Mela” with Blessd and SOG.
